Thanksgiving Journeys and Family Traditions

As Thanksgiving approaches, many of us embark on journeys, near or far, to be with loved ones. How many of you are planning to travel for Thanksgiving this year? Are your plans taking you across states, or just a short hop within your local area? For my family, it’s an annual tradition to make a modest three-hour drive to my mom’s house in beautiful Bradenton, Florida. Bradenton, for those unfamiliar, is nestled on Florida’s sun-kissed west coast. Essentially, our journey involves traversing the entire width of the Sunshine State, from one coast to the other. I often chuckle when I refer to it as a “wee” three-hour drive, because despite the relatively short duration, it can sometimes feel like quite the expedition. This is especially true as the majority of the route meanders through long stretches of flat, often desolate roads, bordered by endless cow pastures and agricultural landscapes. It’s always an adventure to find yourself trailing behind a massive farm tractor on one of those two-lane roads – and yes, I mean a genuine farm tractor, not a tractor-trailer! While passing them is an option, more often than not, there’s just enough oncoming traffic to make you think twice about taking the chance. Yet, despite these minor quirks, it’s generally a wonderfully relaxing drive, particularly since I have the pleasure of being a passenger, leaving the driving to someone else. These journeys are more than just travel; they are a cherished part of our holiday ritual, a prelude to the warmth of family, laughter, and the shared bounty of Thanksgiving. They remind us that the journey to togetherness is often as important and memorable as the destination itself.
